Marshall Bucks the Trend for 2009

06 January 2010

Marshall Airport Cambridge

A year after the opening of the new executive passenger handling facility and the re-launch of the airport, both Marshall Business Aviation and Marshall Airport Cambridge have enjoyed a great number of successes and milestones during 2009.

September 2009 was the best month for financials and aircraft movements at the Airport in six years, and compared to September 2008 the results showed: Five times as many Horse Transport flights; four times the number of major operator training flights; twice as many visiting GA aircraft; double charter flights led by an increase on football team charters; with an overall monthly total of movements of 4,591 which was up 12% on September last year.

Marshall Airport Cambridge was also proud to receive a prestigious award from the Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association (AOPA) for the Best General Aviation Aerodrome 2009. The AOPA sword was presented to Mr Michael Marshall, Chairman and Chief Executive of Marshall Holdings Ltd at a ceremony at the Airport on Thursday 27 August 2009.

A terrific highlight for the year was the Royal visit to the Airport and the Business Aviation Centre on the 19th November – the company was proud to host a special visit by Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh during their visit to the area. They received a short tour of the executive passenger centre and in Hangar 1 (the company’s oldest hangar) they were invited to meet with a number of employees from across the Marshall Group of Companies.
By the end of September 2009, Marshall Business Aviation had surpassed its entire 2008 aircraft maintenance man-hour total and will finish this year 25% up on 2008. The number of customers bringing in aircraft for maintenance has officially doubled this year and now Marshall Business Aviation look after just under 10% of European registered Cessna aircraft.

In terms of aircraft movements, the Business Aviation Centre and Airport are taking approximately 240 business aviation movements each month – proving that the FBO is invaluable not only for passengers travelling through, but the facility is increasingly being used by local companies to hold meetings and receptions.

Other highlights:

At Marshall Airport Cambridge, a newly commissioned B737 configured for sole use of Newmarket equine businesses to move horses and cargo arrived at Cambridge on 22nd May; operated by Atlantic Airways, this aircraft will transport horses around Europe and in to the Middle East. Eighty foals moved between Cambridge and Dublin from the end of October to the beginning of November. The Products & Services arm of Marshall Airport are continuing to work with a number of established customers including: Air Traffic Services management at Blackpool; Air Traffic & Radar Approach Services at Inverness; Air Traffic Engineering at Duxford, North Denes, North Weald, Redhill, Shoreham, Sywell and Wolverhampton; Fire Fighters at Chester; and Airport Management at Redhill, The second Chipmunk Aircraft Festival – also known as Chipfest - was held at the airport from the 17th to 20th September 2009 with 16 Chipmunk aircraft attending – following formation training, the culmination of the event was the formation flight of all 16 aircraft over the skies of Cambridge. This four day event was very successful and the Chipmunk association will be returning for a seminar in March 2010 and the third Chipfest event in September 2010.
For Marshall Business Aviation, there have also been a range of new fleet, contracted and ad hoc customers and not just corporate aircraft – Marshall Business Aviation has been working closely with The Fighter Collection at Duxford by completing FAR checks on their P-51 Mustang and Sea Fury. A number of customers have also seen increased interest in the Continuing Airworthiness Management Organisation service that Marshall can offer to provide a full airworthiness management.

With a brand new image, Marshall Business Aviation made a strong impact at EBACE 2009 with a new high class stand which attracted a great number of visitors; this was followed by Business & General Aviation Day 09 which was held at the Business Aviation Centre and Airport which was attended by over 600 visitors, 40 companies exhibiting and 15 aircraft on static display. At BGAD we were also proud to host the Porsche Club of Great Britain – a relationship which is already reaping benefits for our FBO customers. In 2010 Marshall Business Aviation will be hosting the Arts & Business East regional awards in February where the vast Hangar 22 will provide the canvas for local artists to demonstrate their achievements

2009 was a very promising year and Marshall are looking forward to an even more exciting 2010.
